One of the most important things that an individual can do for his or her health is to eat right and take daily health supplements. There are many different types of supplements on the market today, all of which can improve a person’s health and quality of life. The types of health supplements that a person chooses will depend upon his or her individual needs, but there are some general health supplements that all people should be taking. Some of these are:
Vitamin B complex. This group of vitamins and minerals include Vitamin B2, E, A, and C. Vitamin B help maintain healthy vision and proper cell metabolism. Vitamin B supplements can also prevent colds and flu. A daily vitamin B supplement can give a person the vitamins they need to stay healthy and fight off illness.
Vitamin C. There are several forms of Vitamin C and each has its own benefits. However, a large amount of Vitamin C can be toxic to humans, especially when taken in high doses. That is why health supplements that contain a large amount of Vitamin C are usually advised for the adult population. High doses of Vitamin C can lead to serious medical problems and should only be administered under the supervision of a physician.
Vitamin D. Vitamin D is not only good for strengthening bones and muscles, but it can also prevent and fight against several types of cancer. As an added benefit, Vitamin D is required for proper bone health. Some health supplements that contain Vitamin D are also available as a prescription supplement. Vitamin D is generally recommended for older adults, but doctors may recommend a daily supplement for children as young as six years old who experience a lack of exposure to sunlight.
Calcium. Milk and dairy products are a rich source of important nutrients, including calcium. Health supplements that contain calcium are usually used by people who need to compensate for a deficiency of calcium in their diet, because some of the other essential vitamins and minerals may not be produced by the body’s cells if it is unable to absorb calcium in sufficient amounts.
Probiotics. Probiotics are a type of beneficial bacteria. Many health supplements contain some forms of probiotics along with vitamin and mineral supplements. Probiotics work to maintain the balance of healthy microbial limits in the digestive tract, between yeast and other pathogenic organisms that can cause infections in the gastrointestinal tract. The general adult population needs a minimum amount of probiotics to support normal intestinal flora. As babies and small children may require additional quantities of probiotics to ensure adequate levels of the beneficial bacteria that help prevent infections.
Mineral Products. Health supplements that contain added mineral content are generally considered safer than products that are primarily comprised of synthetic ingredients. Some health supplements that are mainly comprised of natural sources have not undergone product registration by the appropriate authorities, so they may not meet the strict safety requirements. Unless they were manufactured under license, they cannot bear the manufacturer’s or distributor’s promise of safety. If you’re thinking about buying health supplements that contain mineral contents, check the product label to ensure that the minerals have been confirmed as naturally sourced.
Some health supplements also contain vitamins, but the vitamins in such products are generally synthesized from non-natural sources. This means that the vitamins in such products may not be absorbed sufficiently by the body to meet the recommended daily intake level of each vitamin. Consult your physician before taking vitamins in any multivitamin or mineral supplement.
